Although there are no scripture on the clock tower, Büyük Saat (Grand Clock) is known to be built in 1882 by Adana Governor Abidin Paşa. Also the Mayor of Adana, Hacı Yunus Ağa also involved to the construction of the tower. Whilst the occupation of Adana by French forces, the tower was distorted by the Armenians. After the proclamation of the Republic, mechanical pieces of the clock brought from Germany and placed to the tower in 1925.
Clock tower is on a tetragonal prism plan, and has the height of 35 meters. According to the sayings among the locals, yet another 35 meters is also exists underground. Inside the tower, there is a stairs that goes to upper levels and down to underground under the soil level. On the tower, there is a kiosk in baldachin shape, and clock dials are placed on the four sides of this kiosk. At the time when the tower was constructed, a poet, Fani Efendi wrote a verse about the tower:
"A magnificent artifact with no double or like Seeming clock strikes, Meaning government calls Be a worshipper to pray; Because every moment of day, time of pray calls.
With this verse, Fani Efendi tried to explain the fact that, state offices and workers scheduled their working hours according to the strikes of the clock every half an hour...
